Snow in Portland - and also global warming
I have the pleasure of spending the holiday season in Portland OR, where we had more than 15 inches of snow. Unaccustomed to this volume of snow hanging around for so long, the city was nearly paralyzed for several days. People grumbled about "unheard-of" amounts of snow, the "deep freeze," etc.
Then, on Dec 23rd, the Oregonian published a fascinating graph of annual snowfall in Portland from 1871-2008. Two words immediately sprang to mind: Global warming. From 1871-1900, the average annual snowfall was 18.6 inches. For the past two decades, it was about 4 inches. In between, the average dropped monolithically. The trend is clear: Much warmer temperatures in Portland are prevailing now.
Today the city is thawing. Perhaps from the warmth of sharing Christmas with family and friends? Be well and happy, everyone. Enjoy this time in peace.
Hot or cold, we can always choose freedom, peace, and love.

Hi Kim,
I've been reading your essays and tutorials on Japan and Japanese language and I'd like to say "thank you" for putting together a fantastic resource. I feel like I have a better foundation before diving into the language and culture having read them.
Also, after glossing over your blog entry on fiduciary responsibility, you may want to read the UNFI 'Freshfields Report' which states that incorporating ESG factors into your investment decisions does not violate this duty. It's a passive statement of support, but bolsters the idea that pressing the idea of sustainability is not a negative thing.

Thanks to both of you for the compliments on the Japanese pages - I'm happy they are helpful.
And Edward, I have read the Freshfields Report. Yes!
Another inspiration for making ESG legal is the ongoing work to establish the "B Corporation" model as well-accepted. (http://www.bcorporation.net/)
